 席を譲る:give up the seat

JRや私鉄に乗車した時に、必ずある「優先席」、英語で言うと、 “Priority seat” となります。車内放送で、「必要な方に、席を譲ってください」と アナウンスされますが、英語では、どう表現するのでしょうか。

Please show consideration for others and give up the seat when required.
This seat is intended for:
 ・Disabled passengers
 ・Expectant mothers
 ・Those carrying infants
 ・Elderly passengers

上の文は、イギリスのサザン列車運行会社(Southern Railway Ltd)のホームページの “Priority seat card” に掲載されているラベルからの引用です。 この文の中の “give up the seat” が、「席を譲る」という英語表現になります。

上の文では、「優先席」は、障害者、妊婦、幼児を連れている人、お年寄りの為の席ですとなっています。日本の場合、 例えば、JR東日本では、これらの人の他に、「心臓ペースメーカーやその他の医療機器を身につけている人(passenger with pacemakers or other medical devices)」も対象者になっています。

電車内で、「優先席付近では、携帯電話の電源は切り、その他の場所では、マナーモードにしましょう」と放送がかかりますが、この「マナーモード(manner mode)」は、和製英語です。外国から来た人たちに説明する場合は、 “silent mode” が正しい英語です。英語で言うと、次のようになります。

Please turn your mobile phone off near a priority seating area, and turn on silent mode at another area.
